Trichoderma – A Biological Warrior Against Fungi

Trichoderma – A Biological Plan Against Fungal Diseases What is Trichoderma? Trichoderma is a type of fungus that is highly beneficial for farmers. Fungi are present everywhere around us, including in the environment. However, while some fungi are harmful to crops, Trichoderma is a beneficial fungus that helps protect plants and soil. Trichoderma is actually a genus (group) of fungi. In simple terms, there are many species of Trichoderma, but for agricultural use, two important species are commonly utilized: Trichoderma viride Trichoderma harzianum

What Does Trichoderma Do?

  1. It lives around plant roots and protects plants from soil-borne diseases such as white fungus, root rot, wilt, and damping-off.
  2. It improves root health and protects roots from rotting and decay.
  3. It enhances the plant's natural disease resistance.

How Does Trichoderma Work?

1. Directly Attacks Harmful Fungi

Trichoderma surrounds harmful fungi present in the soil and attacks them. It wraps around the pathogen and eventually destroys it.

2. Competes for Space and Nutrients

Trichoderma colonizes the root zone and prevents harmful fungi from getting enough space and nutrients to grow.

3. Produces Special Enzymes

Some Trichoderma enzymes break down the cell walls of disease-causing fungi, effectively destroying them.
